A business delegation from the Republic of Kazakhstan has toured Ngere Tea Factory in Murang’a County as part of efforts to explore Kenya’s premium tea industry and identify opportunities for increased trade and investment.
The delegation, accompanied by officials from the Tea Board of Kenya, visited the Ngere Orthodox Tea Processing Plant, which was commissioned last year, where they were taken through the tea processing chain from leaf reception to the production of premium orthodox tea.
The visit gave the delegation an opportunity to learn about Kenya’s tea production systems, quality assurance measures and value addition initiatives that have earned Kenyan tea global recognition for its quality.
Speaking during the visit, Tea Board of Kenya officials said the engagement was aimed at strengthening trade relations between Kenya and Kazakhstan while creating new market opportunities for Kenyan tea.
“The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to gain firsthand experience of Kenya’s tea production and processing systems, quality assurance standards and value addition initiatives that have positioned Kenyan tea among the finest in the world,” the officials said.
The discussions also focused on expanding market access for Kenyan tea in Kazakhstan through stronger business-to-business partnerships and increased commercial cooperation between stakeholders in the two countries.
Officials noted that growing international interest in orthodox tea presents an opportunity for Kenya to diversify its tea exports and increase earnings for farmers through value addition.
“The engagement explored opportunities to strengthen trade relations, expand market access and promote Kenyan tea in the Kazakhstan market through enhanced business-to-business collaboration,” they said.
The Tea Board further highlighted the success of the Ngere Orthodox Tea Processing Plant as evidence of the growing global demand for Kenyan orthodox tea.
“Ngere’s success is a clear indication that the market for Kenyan orthodox tea is growing. Together, let us add value, diversify our products and increase returns to tea farmers,” the officials said.
Kenya continues to position itself as a leading producer of high-quality specialty teas, with investments in orthodox tea processing expected to enhance the country’s competitiveness in international markets while improving incomes for tea farmers.
