How Fuerte Avocado Farming Is Creating New Opportunities for Kenyan Farmers

Fuerte avocado is steadily gaining ground among Kenyan farmers as demand for the fruit continues to rise in both export and processing markets. While Hass avocado has dominated international trade for years, Fuerte is now attracting attention because of its early harvesting season, strong demand from avocado oil processors, and its ability to thrive in high-altitude regions where other varieties may struggle.

Unlike Hass, which develops a dark purple skin when ripe, Fuerte remains green and has a smoother, thinner skin that makes it ideal for processing into avocado oil, guacamole, and other products. The fruit is also known for its creamy texture and rich flavour, making it popular in fresh markets.

Agricultural experts say the growing interest in Fuerte avocado farming is being driven by changing market dynamics and increasing demand in Europe and the Middle East.

Exporters in 2026 reported shortages of Fuerte avocados as demand surpassed supply during the January to June harvesting window. This has created a profitable opportunity for farmers in regions suitable for the crop.

Fuerte avocado performs best in areas located between 1,200 and 2,100 metres above sea level, making it suitable for counties such as Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Meru, Nakuru, Kericho, Kisii, Bungoma, and parts of Western Kenya.

Farmers are embracing the crop because of its long productive lifespan and reliable market channels.

Unlike seasonal crops, a well-managed Fuerte orchard can remain productive for between 30 and 50 years, allowing farmers to spread establishment costs over several decades.

The crop is also becoming attractive because farmers can sell their produce through different channels including fresh export markets, avocado oil processors, and local markets.

Fresh exporters currently buy Fuerte avocados at between Sh80 and Sh100 per kilogram at the farm gate, while processors purchase the fruit at between Sh30 and Sh50 per kilogram for oil extraction.

Experts note that the existence of both export and processing channels helps cushion farmers from market fluctuations.

To establish a successful orchard, farmers are encouraged to use certified grafted seedlings sourced from reputable nurseries. Certified seedlings currently retail at between Sh150 and Sh350 each depending on the supplier and rootstock variety.

The trees require well-drained loamy soils with a pH of between 5.5 and 7.0 and annual rainfall ranging from 1,000 to 1,600 millimetres.

Farmers are advised to prepare planting holes measuring 60 by 60 centimetres and mix the soil with well-decomposed manure before transplanting the seedlings.

Spacing is also important, with experts recommending six metres by seven metres to allow adequate air circulation and canopy development.

Fuerte avocado trees begin fruiting after three to four years, with full commercial production being achieved from the sixth year onwards.

Under proper management, one acre can produce between 8,000 and 15,000 kilogrammes of fruit annually, while highly intensive farms with irrigation can harvest up to 25,000 kilogrammes.

Researchers say irrigation, pruning, fertiliser application, and pest control are critical in maintaining healthy orchards and increasing productivity.

One of the major challenges facing avocado farmers remains diseases such as Phytophthora root rot, which thrives in waterlogged soils. Farmers are therefore advised to ensure proper drainage and avoid excessive irrigation.

Pests such as thrips and fruit flies also affect production and require regular monitoring and integrated pest management practices.

Despite the challenges, stakeholders in the horticulture sector believe Fuerte avocado farming has strong potential to increase household incomes and strengthen Kenya’s position in the global avocado industry.

With demand for avocado oil and fresh fruit continuing to rise, many farmers are now viewing Fuerte avocado not just as a fruit crop, but as a long-term agribusiness investment capable of generating stable income for decades.
